Knitting. 

“Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn may be turned into cloth. Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other. The active stitches are held on a needle until another loop can be passed through them.”

I tried to compare our life with knitting and that has got some common rules. Knitting is about turning something not really interesting, like a thread into a masterpiece. The same things happens in life. Small coincidences forms people’s lives, and people lives are just small parts of the universe. 

As I found out, knitted things are everywhere. And they could form there own knotted universe.

Knitted alphabet is the first evidence of the existing “knitted” universe. It has its own language, that means that its exists. In support of this, it also has its own life form. But mostly it is copping the human race. Here is n example of some chromosomes and humans organs. 

Knitting is fixing our universe while creating its own. It is playing an important part in human lives. It’s a good way of spending time and the outcome is quiet nice and warm. 

Starting from the clothing details they progressed into knitted models of people and their surrounding elements.

The Giant Carpet.

This giant carpet was created by students of the German Bauhaus University (Weimar)  Sebastian Shonheyt (Sebastian Schönheit). His creation  he exhibited at the annual exhibition in Beijing.The exhibition was a 798 area arts and was called “Two blocks east and west” that was held from November 30, 2008. 
Knitting carpet looks as if it originated somewhere in another world. The author wants to show not only the result of their work, but also the process of creating the original carpet, to recreate an old tradition of knitting. 
Well, we can only find the spokes of a giant, a big coil of rope or cable, and stock up strength and patience to tie their unique interior item!

Tree Knitting.

While searching for an interesting knitting art, I came across some great works by Carol Hummel – she has created these amazing tree covers.

   An overt sign that the growing crochet trend has been taken to new heights, literally, is artist Carol Hummel’s Tree Cozy. As part of a two-year exhibition of eight works by sculptors in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Hummel crocheted a cozy with brightly colored nylon and synthetic material for a tree in front of Cleveland Heights City Hall, which wouldn’t impede “the growth of the tree or [harm] wildlife.” 

   In her artist statement, Hummel refers to the tree cozy as “an emphatically handmade blanket representing femininity and comfort” which covers “a natural object representing masculinity and strength,” a piece that personifies the tree “keeping it cozy and colorful throughout the year, enhancing the beauty of nature,” and evokes “memories of bygone times and places when life was good,” as well as “softens the strong tree form while also emphasizing it.” She says, “The cozy covering the tree fluctuates between comforting blanket and suffocating cover-up; it conceals as much as it protects; it hides as much as it reveals.” Tree Cozy was on display from 2005 through 2008, and landed Hummel an award as the winner of the Heights Public Art Competition. Hummel has also “cozied” a companion tree in India to the one in Ohio, bound another tree in India with rope, was commissioned to crochet a tree in Orlando, Florida, macraméd a mountain in Utah, and has also been known to dress trees in underwear. Hummel’s Cleveland Heights Tree Cozy, which took her 500 hours and the use of a hydraulic lift, recently spawned a tree crochet movement in Yellow Springs, Ohio, which has become a community art project and conversation piece, “made up of panels of yarn knitted individually by residents and visitors alike.”

There is more to knitting than we think about it.

Although its history goes only back to the renascence, knitting is behold as an ancient craft. This is due to it’s history being roughly documented or maybe just because knitting is so simple. In fact that is the motive why, contrary to other crafts, the guilds could not hide knitting techniques for long. Knitting didn’t depend on specialized tools and knowledge, like glass blowing or metalwork, all you need is needles, yarn and two hands. The people learned it and took it home for their personal use. This easiness is also the reason why knitting is so popular and the most social of the crafts. No handicraft has spread so fast through the internet in the last years. A meeting site like meetup.com has it’s largest communities in knitting groups. Although, from what I could gather,Ravelry.com is the real new internet experience for knitters. It’s a knitting database and a social site. There you can find original patterns, contact the designers, show work but also find out who knitted what with this specific yarn.
Looking for new experiences and forms of expression, knitting goes to the streets covering statues and traffic signs. But is it still knitting or did it become a tool of urban art? This article from deputy-dog.com covers some of the guerrilla knitting projects out there but if you are really interested in knowing more about it, I recommend Rose White’s talk “The history of guerrilla knitting”, at the 24th Chaos Communication Congress.

This place looks quiet strange but very interesting! It’s got its own mood. The bar is cool) and the garden(like the idea of having BBQ there))))

As I see this place is really good for installations. I was thinking of combining the photography stuff with something more 3D. I’m not quiet sure about my theme… as well, I’ll likely be working in a team with Ksenia. In a team we can produce more and better work in this two week timing.

Understanding the topic:

-Sentence (linguistics)

In linguistics, a sentence is an expression in natural language —a grammatical and lexical unit consisting of one or more words, representing distinct and differentiated concepts, and combined to form a meaningful statement, question, request, command, etc.

As with all language expressions, sentences contain both semantic and logical elements (words, parts of speech), and also include action symbols that indicate sentence starts, stops, pauses, etc. In addition, sentences also contain properties distinct to natural language, such as characteristic intonation and timing patterns.

Sentences are generally characterized in most languages by the presence of a finite verb, e.g. “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog“.

- Sentence (law)

In law, a sentence forms the final act of a judge-ruled process, and also the symbolic principal act connected to his function. The sentence generally involves a decree of imprisonment, a fine and/or other punishments against a defendantconvicted of a crime. Those imprisoned for multiple crimes, will serve either a consecutive sentence (in which the period of imprisonment equals the sum of all the sentences) or a concurrent sentence (in which the period of imprisonment equals the length of the longest sentence). If a sentence gets reduced to a less harsh punishment, then the sentence is said to have been “mitigated”. Rarely (depending on circumstances) murder charges are “mitigated” and reduced to manslaughtercharges. However, in certain legal systems, a defendant may be punished beyond the terms of the sentence, e.g. social stigma, loss of governmental benefits, or collectively, the collateral consequences of criminal charges.

-Sentence (mathematical logic)

In mathematical logic, a sentence of a predicate logic is a well formed formula with no free variables. A sentence is viewed by some as expressing aproposition. It makes an assertion, potentially concerning any structure of L. This assertion has a fixed truth value with respect to the structure. In contrast, the truth value of a formula (with free variables) may be indeterminate with respect to any structure. As the free variables of a formula can range over several values (which could be members of a universe, relations or functions), its truth value may vary.

We are again working in our group of two:me and Ksenia Kimerina. That’s good for such a quick and important project ’cause we can make a lot of work in good quality together. 

As the exhibition is taking place in the Old Police Station, we decided to start thinking about sentence both law and linguistics. We stopped on the list of human laws. The original idea was to write a sentence in pictures/photos. Further on we came to a list of funny laws of different countries and states and decided to illustrate them, make them like road signs. 

Outcome: we are making an A1 poster of 50 different signs/laws. May be we are making some of the signs standing separate to make our idea more realistic. Also we gonna produce a handbook with this signs for those who want/need to learn them easily.

Dungeness is an Anglo-Saxon name taken from Dung Mersc (Smelly marsh) and is the naess (foreland) protecting the marsh. As the sea level was a great deal higher than today, this would have been  slow moving slt marsh with lots of rotting vegetation providing the smell.

General Details.

Dungeness is one of the most remote of the villages on the Romney Marsh sitting as it does on the corner of the marsh. It has a unique stark beauty with the fishermen’s small homes contrasting with the enormous bulk of the Nuclear Power Stations. 

By the 1400′s the area at Dengeness had stabilised into a shingle bank, before that it was shoals and fast currents. Fishermen settled here and eeked out their livelyhoods by providing food for the other members of the Cinque Ports, Dengemarsh was one of the affiliates to the Cinque Ports . 

The village has been the location of a light, warning of the shoals and fast currents around the point throughout the centuries. The first lighthouse was built in 1613, the land built up and the sea retreated so a second one was built in 1635. Another was built in 1792 as the land again expanded the current “Old Lighthouse” was started in 1901 it stands 143 ft high and is open to visitors. The latest lighthouse was built another 1/2 miles further out into the English Channel it was opened in 1963 and is fully automatic In the late 1800′s the Southern Railway built a station to transport shingle extracted from the beach to use as ballast for their lines over the region. 

You can still see signs of the old railway as a number of local cottages have been constucted from old carriages. Most of the houses here are owned and lived in by fishermen, their boats lie on the beach. 

On the 16th July 1927, the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (RHDR) a narrow gauge railway was opened, the stop at Dungeness was opened 1928, and for a short while until it was opened the trains stopped at Pilot Halt which was demolished in 1968. 

The railway was built by Captain J. E. P. Howey and Count Louis Zborowski to serve the local population and tourist trade, it stretches for nearly 14 miles from Hythe through Dymchurch , St Marys Bay ,its base at New Romney ,Romney Sands and then to the fishermens cottages and lighthouses at Dungeness . It is still a major tourist attraction and well worth a visit. 

The Dungeness A and B power stations were built in the 1960′s and you can go to the visitor Centre which shows the plant and area, and even provides guided tours. 

Dungeness has its own Nature Reserve which acts as a haven for rare birds and marsh dwellers.

Caffeine Addicted

This little C₈H₁₀N₄O₂ molecule is the solution to, and source of, so many problems, very much like it’s friend, the C₂H₅OH.

Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia during the Stone Age, which is lucky, since a central nervous system stimulant like that would probably be outlawed if discovered today.

Caffeine consumption has become a daily ritual and addiction for many people, especially students. Caffeine exists in coffee, soda, tea, chocolate and energy drinks. Five common withdrawal systems are headache, fatigue or drowsiness, depression or irritability, difficulty in concentrating and flu like systems including nausea, muscle pain and stiffness.

OBsessive dictionary.

For the final piece I changed my idea a bit. I stopped on the dictionary of HUMAN OBSESSIONS. People do strange stuff from day to day through their whole life… some of them think that that’s normal, but actually that’s not…

The most common obsession is alphabetizing stuff, especially books, CDs, DVDs, etc. I’m the one who sometimes doing it, which makes my mom crazy, because she is classifying books by authors,collections and colors) 

I hate the squares on the pavement! My friend is always speeding on them! For some people that becoming just a habit, for some that a real obsession. Everything goes wrong if they step on a stripe.

People are obsessed with dry, soft and just washed towels! They are changing them every time using a shower, even if they are taking it three or more times a day…

Cleaning the steering wheel – that my mom’s one. Every time before driving she cleans it with wet antibacterial wipes. Every single time!

Clicking obsession. Some people suppose that it’s deals with the stress or with the mental state of a person. Others just can’t stay without any, even small movement.

Counting stuff. I always count trees on the road when I’m bored… One tree.. two trees… three trees… I think that it’s relaxing in some way. 

There are a lot of people obsessed with their teeth or their smile. My friend is gonna be a dentist and she is always talking about that stuff! She is using dental floss every time after food, clean her teeth with special ionizing brush, special dental paste, eating two apples a day which “keeps her teeth strong”….

This obsession was the starting one. I was told about a man who is actually entering the room three times, every single time. That’s ironically  funny because he is a businessman and he isn’t supposed to be strange at work.

Licking the top of the yogurt. Some said that it’s the tastiest part of it, others think that it’s totally disgusting!

Never eat food after 5 p.m. That’s not a diet, that just a timing some people get used to. For them it’s even unnatural to eat at that time.

My friend can’t eat when someone is smoking around. She told me that she feels like she is actually eating cigarets. That’s strange for me: she is a smoker and I never felt the same.

Oh, Tony… this guy always pressing all the buttons in the elevator! Every time!!! 

A strange common habit for smokers. They change the direction of one cigaret in each pack. Some say that that’s a lucky one, others making wishes. For me that’s still a strange obsession.

I heard of  people who place stuff only on one side of a sink. In article I read that some psychologists suppose that it is a mental problem, which means that one part of human brain works much better then the other. Same stuff is happening when a person eat only from right side of a plate.

Obsession with rolling stuff after washing. I hate ironing it afterwards!

Sanitizer. Every half an hour… a person always have a feeling of dirty hands and trying to strugle with it.

Separating food items on different plates. May be those people don’t think about washing the dishes?!

Separating layers in food. That makes it tastier, or people can’t eat complex food.

Sitting only on the right sight of the sofa. My favorite character , Sheldon from “Big Bang Theory”,  got something like that. He got his spot on the sofa!) From his point of view, that place was perfect for air conditioning, sunlight and got the most suitable for him temperature in the room)

SOCKS GO FIRST!) 

Never store food in plastic. People buy food, bring it home and place on plates (get rid of plastic packaging) to store in the fridge. May be there is something dealing with recycling?

Talking to the TV. Some people feel lonely and the make friends with TV people. Others watching TV so much that the borders between reality and TV disappearing… 

The toilet paper should be always rolling out in the direction opposite to wall. This is the obsession of people who created the hanger for it)

The other one is – making these cute triangles from the end of toilet paper like in the hotels.

Lots of people are doing it! Every time before sleep they are changing the pillow to the other side…

My friend is going mad when her mother buying blue washing stuff… But her mother for some reason hate and can’t use other ones.

I know the girl, who always writing with red or pink pens or pencils. No one ever saw her using the others!

My mum’s friend always use only yellow napkins, towels, toilet paper, kitchen rolls…

Strange one. Use the soap only once and then throw it away. My be it again a case of feeling dirty?

Washing hands every time passing the bathroom.

Wearing only black and dark blue clothes. Real one.

That’s strange, but my friend really know the girl, who was wearing shoes only once and then throwing them away. I’m not sure about expensive shoes, but still…

Annette Messager (born in 1943, lives and works in Paris) is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most important contemporary artists. The retrospective presents an overview of the artist’s career and reveals her use of an astonishing and affecting repertoire of forms and materials, among them soft toys, stuffed animals, fabrics, wool, photographs and drawings.

This exhibition presents a panoramic survey from the intimate and conceptually driven pieces Messager made in the early 1970s to the very large sculptural installations of the past 15 years, in which movement plays an increasingly important role.

Messagers work often includes a large number of small close up pictures of parts of the body. They are made up of small snapshots of themes ‘messanger’ deals with issues of sexual and physical abuse fragmentation of the body, sin, obssesion and apperances, fairy tales and children.

I think that this one was the most shocking piece for many people. Ksenia actually can’t even talk about it!) I was admired by every part of the exhibition, that all told me so much. 

That pigeons are cute) I liked the pre-history for this piece. Annette told in the interview that one day she stepped on dead pigeon… This part became the main theme for my exhibition poster:

one minute movie by Alena Zaynullina

Every day we walk, clapping our hands, speak… The simple movements of our body  are a great source for imagination. They are quiet strong visually and the sounds they can produce are really unique. The great melody could be created by just using them. 

My point was to show the variety  of body possibilities by recording them for one minute. I used three main body parts: hands, legs, and the face. 

I decided to make this film black and white to make it looks like n old movie, like the one with Charlie Chaplain. For lighting effects I used three small flash lights, which used to look like 3 spots in the darkness.

The music theme from the movie “Kill Bill” was chosen spontaneously, because that was an easy one to produce by whistling and it’s a repeating one.

This was a group project, but unfortunately I missed it. But still I was trying to work in a group, which consisted  some of my friends. I asked as much people as I can, but that still wasn’t enough. One person was turning on the camera and then walking away on hills making the noise in the beginning. One was making lights to the legs. The person with the hat was turning the light by her own, but she couldn’t whistle. So while she was imitating it, the person on her left hand side was doing it for her. That was the “hands” person (turning lights by her own). I was the “legs” person and at the same time I was directing the whole process and the lighting timings.

The V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green in the East End of London is a branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum (the “V&A”), which is the United Kingdom‘s national museum of applied arts.

The museum was founded in 1872 as the Bethnal Green Museum, reusing a prefabricated building from Albertopolis which was replaced with some early sections of the modern V&A complex. It was used to display a variety of collections at different times, including the works which can now be seen at the Wallace Collection. In the 1920s, it began to focus on services for children, and in 1974 the director of the V&A, Sir Roy Strong, defined it as a specialist museum of childhood.

Of all the branches, the Bethnal Green Museum has the largest collection of childhood objects in the United Kingdom.The mission of the museum is “To enable everyone, especially the young, to explore and enjoy the designed world, in particular objects made for and made by children.” It has extensive collections of toys, childhood equipment and costumes, and stages a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Our day task was to create a sculptural typeface for the word “TOY“.

The main problem was to find the materials, because all we have was our sketchbooks and various pens and pencils. The place was not familiar to me and I couldn’t find any shops around. 

For some reason I got the only phrase in my head for the whole day: “Don’t play with food!”

In the tube I found “Starburst”… they look like bricks) Another good point – they are already colorful and bright, so they are already attractive to children as toys. 

The first idea for this project was to create a pipe of peace for Barack Obama. That one should be all digital and work as a pipe and a video phone at the same time. The copies of it should be also produced for the other political leaders, which Obama is interested in. This is a new and easy way of connection and communication between the politicians. But this idea was modified by the end of a day…

Garden cress (Lepidium sativum) is a fast-growing, edible plant botanically related to watercress and mustard and sharing their peppery, tangy flavor and aroma. In some regions, garden cress is known as garden pepper cress,pepper grass or pepperwort.

In England cut cress shoots are typically used in sandwiches with boiled eggs, mayonnaise and salt.

Typography task:  I was playing around combining different sizes of letters, combining them together and creating a new shape for the word. Also i was interested in creating a texture for the final production.

                      This is the final varian of the typeface. It is made like a logo. 

Concept:From the first sight we can visually see what it is all about – “cress” structure inside of the letter. The bigger letter “C” is eating the rest letters. This all means: “EAT CRESS!” The “r” letter is made in red color and looks like a tick, which means: “This cress is good!”  At the end of the word I used two symbols of folk and knife to show that this is a food item. 

It could be used on cress packages and the “c” part can be transparent to show that exactly this cress is good.

The idea of the project was to identify main geometrical shapes, such as square, triangle, circle and x-mark, around us and to make 10 pictures of each object and 10 of how they work together in real life.
